In parallel with the barometer of the representation of women in the media, released jointly with the CSA, the National Audiovisual Institute (INA) publishes a new tool dedicated to the media treatment of violence against women in the evening television news.

Over a 20-year period, from 2000 to 2020, six historic channels were scrutinized.

Result: less than 1% of newscast time (0.89%) is devoted to this topic.

M6 and France 2 are at the head of the media coverage on this subject: during these 20 years, M6 for example devoted 1.33% of its newscast offer to this subject, against 0.9% on average on all channels.

At the other end is Arte, the channel which mediates the least the subject, but deals with women's rights from other angles, more societal, according to the report.

A peak during the DSK affair

In terms of sexual violence, it is the DSK affair that has by far occupied the center stage over these 20 years, to such an extent that this affair draws a significant peak on the measurement curve of these subjects.

Then came the murder of Marie Trintignant and that of Alexia Daval.

Capture of the report - 20 Minutes / INA

Rape and sexual violence are most often mentioned (70.8% of subjects), followed by domestic violence (15%) and sexual harassment (11%).

Sexual harassment, in number of subjects - Capture of the INA report.

This last theme becomes particularly visible on the occasion of the Georges Tron affair, and in recent years, as shown by the INA graph reproduced above.

Media

In 2020, women only had 35% of speaking time in the audiovisual media, according to the CSA and the INA
