Leading director of the New Wave, Jean-Luc Godard has confirmed that he will be retiring.

At 90 years old, including 70 in a career that marked the French seventh art, the author of "Pierrot le fou" and "À bout de souffle" explained that he wanted to say "goodbye to the cinema" after writing two scenario.

"I am ending my cinematic life."

It is with these words that Jean-Luc Godard confirmed the imminent end of his career as a director.

The one to whom we owe

was invited to the 25th edition of the Kerala International Festival which was held in February.

In a videoconference posted on YouTube on Wednesday, he spoke of his plans, including that of ending his "life as a filmmaker".

"I finish by doing two scripts. Afterwards, I will say goodbye to the cinema."

(that cannot be invented), which should result in a film that will be broadcast on Arte, will therefore (normally) be the last.

For several years now, Jean-Luc Godard had been discreet, slowing the pace of his achievements.

In April 2020, during a masterclass in Switzerland, he lamented the disappearance of great authors and great actors.

A few months earlier, the death of Anna Karina, the filmmaker's favorite actress he had revealed, had driven the nail into the coffin of an entire generation, that of the New Wave.

"I miss them because together, we were really talking," explained Jean-Luc Godard about the members of this artistic movement.

"We talk about life. Rohmer, Rivette, Truffaut and I went to the movies a lot. We were a team."
