"The books portray people in a way that is harmful and inaccurate," said Dr. Seuss Enterpise in a statement.

These are stereotypical portraits that have been criticized for being racist.

The books that are included include "If I Ran the Zoo", "And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street" and "The Cat's Quizzer".

Popular in children's literature

Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr Seuss, passed away in 1991 and was one of the most popular authors in English - language children's literature and his books have been sold in hundreds of countries.

In Sweden, he is more of a mystery and none of the current titles that are now being withdrawn have been published in Swedish.

- We have chosen the books we really liked best.

And then it has not been those who are now opted out, says Tobias Nielsén, CEO and publisher at Volante, which is the Swedish publisher of Dr Seuss' books.

River up emotions

Among other things, the conservative news channel Fox News calls the event "the latest example of politically correct liberalism" and believes that the so-called "cancel culture" has gone too far.

"We have more important things to do than constantly paint a picture of every book and program produced by a fragile past," writes Howard Kurtz in an article.
