Gore Verbinski's next project will take him to a world imagined by George RR Martin.

The director of

Pirates of the Caribbean

revealed in an interview to Collider that he was in full writing work with writer Dennis Kelly (

Utopia

) to adapt a new author of

Game of Thrones

(

Game of Thrones

in VF).

“One of the screenplays (I'm working on) is based on a George RR Martin short story called

Sandkings

, which is that brilliant little twisted short story that I love.

And I work with a great writer, Dennis Kelly, who wrote the original version of

Utopia

… The original British series is brilliant.

And Dennis is adapting my film, so I'm a little excited about it, ”revealed the filmmaker without going further in his explanations.

What we do know is that the new

Sandkings

is the only one of all the stories written by the best-selling author to have won him the Hugo and Nebula awards, reserved for science fiction and fantasy authors.

Dangerous game

Sandkings

tells the story of Simon Kress, a wealthy man who collects rare, exotic ... and above all dangerous animals.

And in particular the "kings of the sands", a species of intelligent insects, which he likes to see kill each other.

The spectacle will turn into a disaster when these little beasts manage to escape from their terrarium to and invade his house.

Originally, George RR Martin wanted to make it into a series of novels, but he never managed to complete his project.

Evil tongues will say that it has become a habit with the author of

Game of Thrones

, whose sixth opus of his Saga of Ice and Fire has been "in progress" since 2012. 

Sandkings

has already been adapted in 1995 in a TV movie with Beau Bridges, then in a graphic novel written by Doug Moench.

Two other projects related to the work of George RR Martin are currently in production: 

House of the Dragon

, the prequel to 

Game of Thrones

, as well as

In The Lost Lands

, adapted from another short story, and which will be directed by Paul WS Anderson, with Mila Jovovich and Dave Bautista.

An adaptation of The

Adventures of Dunk and the Egg

is currently in writing.
