In 1931, 90 years ago, two films were released, almost simultaneously, called to change the history of the Seventh Art and which immediately became classics. Produced by visionary Carl Laemmle jr. for Universal, Todd Browning's Dracula and James Whale's Doctor Frankenstein adapted successful novels by Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley. With their mixture of gothic horror and a visual style that drank from German Expressionism, these films are considered two of the great heights of horror cinema of all time and the passage of the years has only increased their value. To celebrate that 90th birthday, we selected (in alphabetical order) eleven other key films in a genre that has a legion of loyal fans around the world.
