An eight-year-old boy died in hospital after breaking into a frozen lake in Hesse.

Doctors had fought for hours for the boy's life, but had to determine his death shortly before midnight, the police said early Tuesday morning.

According to the police, the child had walked on the no longer viable ice of the Rommeroder lake near Großalmerode in the Hessian Werra-Meißner district while playing.

After he broke in, he was no longer able to free himself.

Another child who had been out with the boy early Monday evening got help.

It took less than an hour for divers to pull the broken-in boy ashore.

How long he had been under the ice was initially unclear.

In critical condition and under ongoing resuscitation measures, he was flown by rescue helicopter to a hospital in Kassel, where he later died.

The child's parents were given pastoral care.

The criminal police are investigating the cause of death and the circumstances of the accident.

The rescue workers were on site with a large number of police, fire brigade and divers from the DLRG.

A helicopter with a thermal imaging camera was also used.

The police warned that although there were still closed ice sheets in some stagnant waters despite the plus degrees, these were no longer stable and there was an acute danger to life if they were entered.

Parents should urge their children not to go on such ice rinks under any circumstances.
