To celebrate the National Reading Month, many cultural institutions in the UAE organize various activities to enhance the habit of reading and turn it into a daily habit in life.

The UAE celebrates reading every year, in implementation of a Cabinet decision in 2017, which set March as a national month for reading every year, to enhance and increase the link to reading, with the aim of forming a knowledge economy.

The 2021 Reading Month initiative aims to enhance the role of parents in instilling a love of reading in their children, in addition to highlighting the importance of reading in achieving family cohesion and cohesion, and its great role in early childhood development, and enabling children to explore and search for inspiration among the pages of books.

Reading for All

On this occasion, the Emirates Literature Foundation launched the Reading for All Challenge, and all residents of the United Arab Emirates have the opportunity to participate.

This cultural challenge includes two categories, the individual and the family, and entries are accepted in both Arabic and English.

The challenge requires participants to read as many books as possible in one month, and to present a list of all the books being viewed, with a one-line summary for each book.

The family category is based on the slogan of the month of reading for this year (My Family Reads), which focuses on strengthening the role of parents in instilling the love of reading in the hearts of children, and raising a generation passionate about reading and knowledge.

Children must participate in reading all books registered in the family category, either the book is read to the child or he must participate in the reading.

All books must be read with or for the same child registered in the challenge, with the possibility of changing adults who will read to him.

Isabel Abu Alhoul, Executive Director and Member of the Board of Trustees at the Emirates Literature Foundation, said: “The Month of Reading is a wonderful and important initiative, as there is a focus on forming a new generation of readers.

And we must not forget that adults can play a big role in shaping young people's view of books.

We launch the Reading Challenge to remind people to make time to read books in their daily lives.
