Cine.Nomadland, the winner of the Golden Globes who refutes Netflix and Amazon
Nomadland
, Chinese director
Chloé Zhao's
superb trip to nowhere
, helped shed sanity on a Golden Globes gala as bizarre and incoherent as usual.
The one that is incontestably the film of the year won the statuette for best drama and best director, but ended up dispossessed of the award for its main banner, the huge
Frances McDormand
.
Another of those decisions that have accelerated the loss of prestige of these awards.
All this in a gala in which
Sacha Baron Cohen
took with humor the two awards that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association awarded him for the irreverent
Borat
, film film sequel.
She was the other winner of the
Golden Globes
of the
pandemic
along with
The Crown
and
Netflix
in general.
The punch on the table was resounding: 10 prizes in total.
"Thanks to the all white HFPA,"
Cohen
said sarcastically
from his home when accepting the award for best comedy actor -the film also won best comedy-, one more reference to the absence of black members among the journalists of the organization which was the constant of the night.
The previous investigation by the
Los Angeles Times
newspaper
uncovered not only that void but also the unethical practices of those responsible for the awards, which gave an even more uncomfortable nuance to the event than was assumed by the limitations of the
pandemic
.
Actually, there was more expectation for what the presenters,
Tina Fey
and
Amy Poehler
- simultaneous presenters from New York and Los Angeles - would say about it, than for the awards in general in a year without great titles in competition.
They did not beat around the bush.
"We all know that award shows are stupid," Fey said.
They are even a "scam," he added.
"The point is, even with stupid stuff, inclusion is really important, and there are no black members in the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association
. Maybe you didn't get the message because your office is the back cubicle of a French McDonald's." joked at the end.
Poehler
, for his part, was in charge of reminding them of the exclusion of four films directed and performed by African Americans in the category of best film.
"Everyone is understandably upset with the HFPA's decisions," he noted in front of tables full of medical and emergency personnel during the
pandemic
.
"Look, a lot of ostentatious garbage has been nominated. But that happens. It's like his thing. But a good number of black actors and black-led projects were ignored."
The pressure forced the HFPA to respond.
"As in film and television, representation is vital. We must have black journalists in our organization," said former president
Meher Tatna
.
Luckily, several African Americans took home a
Golden Globe
.
John Boyega
(
Small Ax
),
Daniel Kaluuya
(
Judas and the Black Mesiah
),
Andra Day
(
The United States vs Billie Holiday
) and
Chadwick Boseman
(
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
), a
posthumous
Golden Globe
that led to the most emotional speech of the night.
His wife,
Taylor Simone Ledward
, could not hold back tears from beginning to end of her speech.
"I'd say something nice, something inspiring," he managed to say with a half broken voice.
Jodie Foster
and
Rosamund Pike
were also awarded for their film work, as was
Aaron Sorkin
for the script of
The Trial of the Chicago 7
.
The best animated film went to Pixar, represented by
Soul
.
No surprises.
In addition, hers was the award for best soundtrack.
The best original song went to
The Life Ahead
, the
Netflix
film
starring the eternal
Sofia Loren
.
Netflix TV dominance
On television,
Netflix's
dominance
was also overwhelming.
The Crown's
success
as best drama was predictable, though perhaps not as dominant.
They prevailed in every category in which they had options.
Emma Corrin
in her impeccable role as Lady Di convinced the HFPA as a debut actress in the series, as did
John O'Connor
doing Carlos of England, beating the favorite and veteran
Al Pacino
.
Gillian Anderson
, perhaps the best of the fourth season in the role of Margaret Thatcher, also convinced.
Simply superb.
In total, four
Golden Globes
to add to the account of the mother of all platforms
In the best comedy category, the HFPA followed in the footsteps of the
Emmys
by awarding the top prize to
Schitt's Creek
, culminating a memorable farewell in its sixth season and final season.
She added two
Golden Globes
- thanks to
Katherine O'Hara
for best actress - to the 9 Emmys she accumulated in September.
The
Lady's Gambit
was also sung.
One of the television phenomena of the year praised not only the series but the figure of
Anya Taylor-Joy
.
His was the Globe for best actress for a television film.
