The detection of 13 cases of the South African variant of the coronavirus in Chambourcy forced the authorities to step up health measures there.

The primary schools and the college of this city of less than 6,000 inhabitants, west of Paris in the Yvelines, will not reopen on Monday.

After two weeks of vacation, this day was to be the start of the school year for the students.

In mid-February, six adults working in a nursery school in the city as well as seven children tested positive for the South African variant of the coronavirus, said the Yvelines prefecture, confirming information from

Faced with this "beginner cluster", Mayor Pierre Morange (Libres!) Informed residents via Facebook of the closure from March 1 to 5 of nursery schools, elementary schools and Chambourcy college, welcoming a little less than 1,200 students in total .

The screening having highlighted an "intra-family contagion", the authorities have decided to close all schools to prevent siblings from spreading the virus, according to the prefecture.

The extra-curricular centers and the municipal crèche were also closed preventively, said the mayor of Chambourcy.

Test results expected Tuesday

In addition, the population has been invited to be tested on Saturday and Sunday, with a target of 1,400 tests by the end of the weekend.

Saturday, 567 screenings had been carried out, according to the Yvelines prefecture which welcomes the “involvement” of the inhabitants.

The results of the screening, expected next Tuesday, should make it possible "to see it sufficiently clear" to decide on an extension of the closing or reopening of schools, said the mayor.
