Nice and the entire Riviera coast subject to containment on weekends -

20 Minutes

  • After the new restrictions announced by the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes on Monday, the city of Nice, as well as 62 other municipalities in the department, entered confinement this weekend, from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday 6 a.m.

  • The municipal and national police have deployed large numbers of troops to "enforce the new rules" this weekend as that of next week.

Empty garbage cans.

A beach only populated by seagulls.

A few sportsmen and carefree passers-by (or rebels) sharing the promenade des Anglais.

And, every hour, the voice of the loudspeakers which comes to remind the new rules, breaks the ambient calm: "For the protection of all, please respect the regulations in force".

The third confinement, localized and only the weekend has indeed started this Nice Saturday morning.

For the occasion, the municipal and national police coordinated their operations to “cover all the districts of the city”.

"Road checks are carried out at the entrances and exits of the city," announces Richard Gianotti, director of the municipal police.

In addition to fixed checkpoints, we have also deployed mobile pedestrian, bicycle and scooter teams.

We are also supplementing with video surveillance to detect groups of people ”.

In total, 120 municipal police officers and 40 ASVP agents are called upon to "enforce the instructions" with 32 national police personnel in support.

"It will be the same figures Sunday and next week", specifies the director.

"People are used to it now"

“I am not surprised, we are in order, launch Laurence and Stéphane, gone out to shop.

The police are doing their job, that's normal ”.

On avenue Jean-Médecin, "where there are the most pedestrians", according to Richard Gianotti, municipal officers check every person they pass.

“People are used to it now,” says Julie, a babysitter for two years.

And U.S. too !

We know how to read certificates quickly ”.

“We have had a continuous speech for a year so it's zero tolerance, adds the director.

People must bring their certificate and an identity document, otherwise a fine of 135 euros ”.

At the end of the first morning, “out of more than 500 road and pedestrian checks carried out, 31 fines for not wearing a mask were drawn up, 49 for lack of certification and about ten reports for people who were on the road. Prom, says the director.

We can say that, globally, people have understood and are playing along ”.

"It's stupidity"

Maybe not all.

On the Promenade des Anglais, Michel Lippmann is walking, he has just closed his restaurant at the port because "there was no one there this morning".

“I just ran into municipal officials at the hashtag level [the #ILoveNice sign].

They asked me to change the sidewalk.

But this is nonsense!

It's completely silly to make me walk two meters of space rather than fifteen on the other side.

I will meet more people.

I am better there!

"

White and red ribbons mark out the stairs leading to the beaches and signs indicate “prohibited pedestrian traffic”.

Signage that Régine and Jacques Aribaud had not seen before settling on the blue chairs.

“We didn't know it was forbidden,” admits Jacques Aribaud.

We were at the market and we wanted to take advantage of our hour of walking to go see the sea. If we meet the police, we hope to benefit from their leniency ”.

Régine Aribaud adds: “Perhaps they should have put more obvious barriers.

But it is true that seeing the empty beach, one feels that it is confinement ”.

An empty city that many fled on Friday before confinement began.

“There were a lot of traffic jams.

Many people from Nice have a second home in the high country and have gone to take in the mountain air, failing to take that of the sea. But you will not have to come back until Monday after 6 am ”, recalls the director of the local police.

Otherwise a fine of 135 hours is also foreseen.
