Controlling the vast majority of the content on offer has a number of advantages.

One of them is being able to give more

voice to women and minorities

to curb the evident inequality that exists in Hollywood.

Netflix seems to have done the same thing, which states in a report that 52% of series and movies that were produced between 2018 and 2019 had a woman or a girl as the main character.

Of those roles, 35.7% belong to a group underrepresented in the industry, compared with 28% of the 100 highest-grossing films released in theaters during those two years.

The study, commissioned by Netflix from the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, analyzes 126 films and 180 series to understand their level of inclusion in

gender, race, the LGBTQ + community and the disabled.

The conclusion is that "Netflix has shown an improvement in its series and films between 2018 and 2019", in the words of Stacy L. Smith, head of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative of the same university that has made the analysis possible.

"One of the main reasons for these strong numbers is that

women

were hired

behind the scenes,"

the report states.

Of the 130 directors of the

streaming

company's films

, 25% were women in 2018 and 20.7% in 2019, well above the 7.6% of the studios' highest-grossing films in the same period.

It is a case similar to that of screenwriters -25.2% versus 16.7% - and producers -29% versus 19%.

The queen of platforms worldwide also increased her

share of "women of color",

with 19% of all leading roles, on a par with the United States census, a situation similar to actors in underrepresented groups. that took 34% of the roles in series and feature films.

"The change over time means that Netflix movies and series are approaching a proportional representation to the US population of the same individuals in 2019," according to the report.

Overall, the Reed Hastings-led company chose to include more African American talent during those two years, from screenwriters, directors, producers, and all kinds of creative staff.

Where they do not pass with such a high note is in the chapter of stories dedicated to the

US Hispanic community.

Only 2.6% of the leading roles were for Latinos, with only 7 people from that ethnic group playing director, producer or screenwriter roles in Netflix movies.

"The

LGBTQ +

community

and people with disabilities are

rarely represented on screen," the study says.

In films they occupied 4% of the roles and in series only 1.1%, despite the fact that 12% of the population identifies as part of that group.
