Germany experienced the tenth winter in a row that was too warm.

The German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Friday in Offenbach.

The temperature average was 1.8 degrees Celsius, which means that the reference value according to the measurement period 1961 to 1990 used for comparisons was exceeded by 1.6 degrees.

December and January were therefore characterized by the change between very mild and wet and cold weather.

February was very cold at first, then very mild.

In particular, the spring-like weather in the second half of February was extreme, said the weather service.

For six days in a row, temperatures over 20 degrees were reached in Germany.

There has not been a comparable case since the systematic weather records began.

The maximum number of days with more than 20 degrees in a row was previously three.

This last happened in February 2019.

The winter 2020/2021 was therefore also snowy.

Throughout Germany, 180 liters of precipitation fell per square meter, which is almost the mean value for the reference period from 1961 to 1990.

It is 181. However, there were large regional differences.

In the Black Forest, up to 585 liters per square meter fell locally, while in parts of eastern Germany it was only around 50 liters.

With 175 hours of sunshine, the three months of December, January and February were also sunnier than usual, according to the DWD.

The average is 153 hours.

For its first preliminary winter balance, the weather service used the data from its approximately 2000 measuring stations.
