In 2019 in France, fifty-three children and adolescents lost their lives, due to violence carried out by a member of their family.

A lower record than in 2018, according to figures released on Friday by the National Child Protection Observatory (ONPE).

This decrease, which occurs after an increase in 2018 compared to 2017, "should be interpreted with caution and therefore does not allow to conclude to a trend", tempers the ONPE. Two thirds of the victims were under five years old, specifies he also.

Drop in approvals to adopt

At the end of 2019, 312,500 minors were followed by the child protection services, ie + 1.6% compared to 2018. And “112,706 new minors were referred to a children's judge”, a figure up 2.7% over one year.

📍📈The ONPE statistical note "Key figures in child protection as of December 31, 2019" has just been published.

It presents 8 key indicators and analyzes changes.

In addition, at the end of 2019, there were 3,220 children with the status of “wards of the State”, that is to say in theory adoptable, ie 6% more than in 2018. “This increase is part of a long growing trend, since the number of pupils has increased by 44% since 2008, ”observes the ONPE.

Children born “under X”, on the other hand, were less numerous: 470 in 2019 against 548 in 2018 (-14%).

In 2019, 690 state wards were adopted (-5%), and the number of couples (or singles) granted approval for adoption continued to drop, to 10,200 (-4, 5% over one year).

While the prospects for adoptions are increasingly reduced, especially internationally, this number has collapsed in ten years: it was divided by 2.6 between 2009 and 2019.
