The numbers of hospitalizations for Covid-19 and patients in intensive care remained at high levels on Thursday, even if the number of contaminations decreased compared to the day before, according to data from Public Health France (SpF).

Hospitals had 25,317 coronavirus patients, up from 25,614 on Wednesday.

Over the last twenty-four hours, 1,454 people have been hospitalized, against 1,636 the day before.

The intensive care units, which receive the most serious cases, remained under great tension with 3,430 patients on Thursday (3,436 on Wednesday).

The number of new admissions to these services also remained high, with 301 patients in the last 24 hours (319 the day before).

The figures over the last seven days, which allow the data to be smoothed out, remain stable with 9,400 new hospitalizations in one week, including 1,845 in intensive care units.

85,608 deaths since the start of the epidemic

The daily number of contaminations was 25,403 cases, well behind the 31,519 positive cases recorded on Wednesday, which represented a high since mid-November.

The positivity rate (percentage of people positive for Covid-19 out of all people who have been tested) has returned to a high since the end of January, at 6.9%.

The disease has killed 261 patients in the last twenty-four hours (278 Wednesday), bringing the total number of deaths caused by the epidemic in France to 85,608 people.

Prime Minister Jean Castex announced Thursday evening the placing under surveillance of 20 departments, for which local re-containment measures could be taken depending on the circumstances, as early as next week.
