Dozens of flamingos have died in recent days in a lagoon in northern Greece.

The birds had swallowed pellets, used illegally by hunters.

“Since the end of January, when we received the first two flamingos with symptoms of poisoning, we have treated a total of nine birds,” said Stavros Kalpakis, from the NGO Action for Wild Fauna and Flora.

All of them had swallowed pellets.

Many other dead birds were then found.

Hunting and illegal shot

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, hunting is restricted in Greece and containment has been in place in the country since November.

The lagoon of Agios Mamas, in the Halkidiki peninsula, became in 2020 the first breeding site of flamingos in Greece.

But the place is actually deadly for the birds.

Stavros Kalpakis laments that the rules imposed on hunters under lockdown are largely ignored.

In addition, the use of weights, which is illegal in Greece in wetlands, is still massive, denounce nature groups.
