"Our culture is raising little girls just to destroy them."

It is with these words that Mara Wilson describes the entertainment industry.

The actress, who rose to prominence as a child in films like

Matilda

or

Mrs. Doubtfire

, denounced, in an editorial for the

New York Times

, how she was, from an early age, " sexualized ”by the public and the media and transformed into an object.

“It was cute when 10 year olds sent me letters saying they were in love with me.

This was not the case when 50-year-old men did.

Before I was even 12, there were pictures of me on foot fetish websites and child porn photoshops.

Each time, I was ashamed.

Hollywood decided to tackle harassment in the industry, but I have never been sexually harassed on a film set.

My sexual harassment has always come from the media and the public, ”she wrote in her text, where she compared her situation to that of Britney Spears.

Sexualized from childhood

From adolescence, Mara Wilson chose to withdraw from Hollywood and not to follow the path of all these young actresses who, to make the transition to adulthood with the public, are forced to go through a hyper sexualization.

“I had been sexualized before, and I hated it.

I had never appeared in an outfit that revealed my body more than a floral dress that reached up to my knees.

It was intentional, my parents thought it would be safer for me.

But it didn't work.

Since I was six, people have asked me in interviews if I have a boyfriend.

The journalists asked me who was the sexiest actor and told me about the arrest of Hugh Grant for being caught with a prostitute, ”she added.

The actress, who has since become a voice actor and writer, says she and Britney Spears learned the same lesson growing up: "When you're young and famous, you don't control anything."

Since the broadcast of

Framing Britney Spears

, which goes into detail on how the singer's father managed to keep control of his heritage after his public nervous breakdown in 2007, the debate around the way in which certain young people are instrumentalised artists or actors was revived in Hollywood.

Hundreds of thousands of the singer's fans have re-launched calls to "release" the star with the hashtag #FreeBritney.
