By 2050, Michelin tires will be made entirely from sustainable materials.

They will be produced entirely from renewable, recycled or biobased products, specifies the French group in a press release.

"Thanks to biomass from plant waste, 4.2 million tonnes of wood chips could be incorporated into Michelin tires each year", underlines the group.

The tire giant is working towards this objective with the companies Axens and IFP Energies Nouvelles.

Different recyclable materials

Michelin intends in particular to develop biobased production of a component of synthetic rubber, butadiene, for the time being derived from petroleum.

Styrene, another component of synthetic rubber, can be produced from packaging or insulation boards.

Michelin has signed a partnership with Pyrowave, which is studying this process and is due to launch a demonstrator in France by 2023.

Michelin has also invested in the company Carbios, which works on recycling PET plastic objects (such as bottles).

This substance can be used in the manufacture of polyester thread, used in tires.

In early February, Michelin started construction of its first recycling plant in Chile, which will transform tired tires into several rubber-based products.

In 2020, 28% of the components used to manufacture tires at Michelin were made from sustainable, natural or recycled materials.

Together with Total, Carrefour and Airbus, the group is part of the Coalition for the Energy of Tomorrow, which aims for tangible results from 2030 in reducing the climate impact of transport and logistics.
