More than 20 years after the breakout of a convicted murderer and felon from North Rhine-Westphalia in Portugal, a worldwide public manhunt has begun.

The search call for Norman Volker Franz, who is wanted for fivefold murder, is to be shared on the social media channels of 194 countries, as the North Rhine-Westphalian State Criminal Police Office said on Tuesday.

For the first time a manhunt from North Rhine-Westphalia lands on the Europol website “Europe's Most Wanted”.

Franz was sentenced to life imprisonment for double homicide in 1996.

A year later he managed to escape from the Hagen correctional facility.

A year later he managed his second escape from the central prison in Lisbon.
