Daft Punk broke up after 28 years.

Since 1993 the duo has been regarded as a pioneer in the field of electronic music and put the French dance scene on the map internationally.

Daft Punk members Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo form a band together with Laurent Brancowitz (who later joined the band Phoenix) in the early nineties.

Bangalter and De Homem-Christo then continue as a duo and call themselves Daft Punk (crazy punk), after this term was used in a review of their music.

They score their first record deal when they hand over a number of demos to someone from the Scottish label Soma during a party.

Not much later their first hit

Da Funk follows

.

In 1996 they signed with Virgin, where they released their first album

Homework

a year later

, featuring the worldwide hit

Around The World

.

Later the men set up their own record label and they prove to be a great source of inspiration for contemporaries such as Air, Justice and Sébastien Tellier.

Due to solo records and other projects, it takes four years for the duo's second album to be released.

At

Discovery

is the song

One More Time

, which is an international hit.

All fourteen songs on the album will be accompanied by a video clip, made together with artist Leiji Matsumoto, bundled in the animated film

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem

.

Daft Punk reportedly spends no less than $ 4 million in its own money on that film.

After several years of focusing on other projects,

Human After All

, Daft Punk's third album

, is released in 2005

.

Just a year later, a compilation album follows, after which the duo goes on a rare tour.

As part of this, the two will also be in AFAS Live (then called Heineken Music Hall) in Amsterdam in 2007.

After the tour, Bangalter and De Homem-Christo return to their studio in Paris where they start working on the music for the Disney movie

Tron: Legacy

.

They provide the complete soundtrack album that will be released in 2010, just like the movie.

In 2013 they will release their latest studio album,

Random Access Memories

.

In the end it turns out to be the most successful album of the band, which focuses more on music styles such as funk and disco and less on their electro sound.

It gives them

the biggest hit of their career

with

Get Lucky

, a collaboration with Pharrell Williams.

The song takes first place in the charts in many parts of the world.

'We are not performers, we are not models'

The duo were known for giving few interviews and appeared incognito during performances.

In the beginning the two wore masks and later they became helmets.

In a rare interview with

Rolling Stone

in 2013, they explained their interest in the line between fiction and reality.

"People thought the helmets were a marketing ploy, but for us it was

sci-fi glam

."

The men also believe that the helmets grip their audience more than their faces would have.

"We are not performers, we are not models. It would not be nice for humanity to see our faces. The robots are much more exciting for humans," said De Homem-Christo.

After 2013 there will no longer be music by the duo, but the two will still go into the studio with the Canadian world star The Weeknd.

They produced his hits

I Feel It Coming

and

Starboy.

On February 22, 2021, the duo announces that Daft Punk no longer exists.

A short film

entitled

Epilogue

shows a scene from his 2006 film

Electroma

.

The two say goodbye in a desert, after which one of them explodes.

A reason for the farewell is not given.
