Corona live: Mutations "We are dealing with a second epidemic"

With more and more positive corona tests, virus variations are detected - also in Munich.

According to Bavaria's State Chancellor Florian Herrmann, changes in the spike protein were found in 151 of 365 corona samples examined in the seventh calendar week - i.e. in 41.4 percent of the cases.

The three corona variants, which were initially identified in Great Britain, Brazil and South Africa, all have a mutation in the corresponding protein.

The British, Brazilian and South African Corona variants have mutations on this protein.

"Speaking soberly, we are dealing with a second epidemic," said Herrmann after a cabinet meeting.

Nationwide, the share of the British mutation alone accounts for around 30 percent of infections, as Michael Müller, chairman of the Association of Accredited Laboratories in Medicine (ALM), explained on Tuesday in a video link.
