Who from the baguette, the rooftops of Paris or the Biou d'Arbois will be designated to represent France and be included in the intangible heritage of Unesco?

Between the Parisian zinc roofs and the mythical baguette, the battle rages on.

Everyone defends their belonging to the national culture.

Which French symbol will be registered this year in the intangible heritage of Unesco?

Three candidates are in the running to be proposed as a candidate by France: the Biou d'Arbois, a traditional wine festival in the Jura, the mythical baguette de pain and the artisans of the roofs of Paris.

If all are part of the national culture, only one will be able to compete for the prestigious label, which promotes traditional know-how.

The competition promises to be tight.

The baguette, French intergenerational heritage

For the defenders of the bakery, the argument is clear.

"We are a better candidate because the baguette is a subject that concerns everyone," said Dominique Anract, president of the National Bakery Confederation.

For him, the baguette, preferably well cooked, is the symbol of French heritage.

"It transcends social classes. The fact of going to get this baguette every day, to send the first race to a child, the first piece of bread for a baby. It is this culture that we want to preserve" , continues the president of the National Bakery Confederation, at the microphone of Europe 1. "The roofs of Paris are a bit in competition. We will invite them, I think, to eat a good baguette with us."

Give visibility to the trades of roofers, zinc workers and ornamentalists

But opposite, the main opponent has repartee.

"It is not with the baguette that we are going to rebuild Notre-Dame", launches Gilles Mermet, ambassador of the candidacy of the roofs of Paris.

Twenty-two meters above the ground, he admires the panoramic view: a veil of zinc plates in all shades of gray.

The goal is not only symbolic for this craftsmanship.

"Registering the know-how of roofers-zinc workers and ornamentalists in the heritage of Unesco, it is a way to shed a prestigious light on this profession to try to attract young people", explains the ambassador.

"There are 500 young people missing every morning on the roofs of Paris and this light will certainly help to arouse vocations."

The candidate hopes to be luckier than last year.

The roofs of Paris had been eliminated in the last straight line facing the Martinican skiff.
