The Ministry of Health continues to consider the British, South African and Brazilian variants as the most important of the coronavirus, but has focused on four others that "are arousing growing interest":

two others from the United Kingdom, the Californian and the Rio de Janeiro

.

This is stated in the latest update of the "Report on the epidemiological situation of variant B.1.1.7 of SARS-CoV-2 and other variants of interest", in which it reveals that

11 cases of the variant

have been detected in our country

P.2 (Rio de Janeiro)

, two of them in travelers diagnosed in Madrid and the other 9 in the Canary Islands for which "epidemiological data are not yet available."

Another case of variant

B.1.525 (United Kingdom)

has also been detected

, which, according to the document, was sequenced in January 2021;

There are also

VOC 202102/02,

which was observed for the first time in Bristol (United Kingdom), and

B.1.429,

in California, of which Spain has not confirmed any cases yet.

And it is that "new variants are continually being described", and these four are the ones that "are arousing growing interest", although Health considers that

for now the most important are three: the British B.1.1.7;

B.1.351 (501.V2), from South Africa;

and P1, from Brazil

.

Of the first,

B.1.1.7

, the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies raises the number of confirmed cases to 898, although there are another 183 that have been communicated "through informal sources (press or similar) not included "in that figure.

Remember that it is "more transmissible, probably more lethal and does not seem to escape immunity", either acquired by natural infection or through the vaccine.

It is the dominant one in the United Kingdom and Ireland, although "there is a rapid substitution of the other circulating variants in other countries", with more than 8,600 cases detected in 31 European countries.

Detection in Spain "is highly variable from one community to another, and the data indicate a rapid increase in its distribution in recent weeks": thus, of the 898 cases, Cantabria has reported 145, followed by Madrid, with 130, and Balearic Islands (117), while the Canary Islands only have 3, Aragon 1 and Ceuta none.

In between, Navarra (90);

Murcia (76);

Castile and León (72);

Asturias (71);

Andalusia (59);

Valencian Community (64);

Castilla-La Mancha (22);

Galicia (12);

Basque Country, Extremadura and Melilla (9 in all cases, although in the first there are 231 according to other sources);

La Rioja (5) and Catalonia (4).

With regard to

the South African

, also present in Zambia, Botswana and many European countries, the document points to a "probable increase in transmissibility", a reduction in the neutralization of mono and polyclonal sera and the effectiveness of vaccines "between moderate and high ".

Of the 15 confirmed cases to date, 6 have been by sequencing (of them, 4 could be related) and the other 9 belong to the same group related to a trip to Tanzania.

Regarding

the Brazilian P1

, its transmissibility and escape from the immune response are still being studied, although it is known that neutralizing antibody titers have been reduced in sera of vaccinated people in the Manaus Region (Brazil).
