and Portugal: Marvão, Mértola, Grândola, Golegã and Odemira are historical towns that preserve curious traditions and unbeatable landscapes.
Without a doubt, Alentejo still has much to discover and is presented (now more than ever) as the ideal region for

thanks to its low population density, its proximity to Spain, the possibility of arriving by car and the beauty of its landscapes.
Marvao
Marvão is a pleasant and quiet town, which is an ideal place to disconnect from routine, especially at sunrise and sunset, as it offers exceptional panoramic views of the plain and the São Mamede Mountains.
Its streets are narrow and the houses have picturesque roofs.
The town is full of colorful flowers and boasts wonderful views, a
castle
, some guest houses and
good restaurants.
Without a doubt, a perfect destination to go for a season to

and disconnect.
Mértola
Mértola is a
medieval town
perched on rocky hills that rise at the foot of
the Guadiana River
, in lower Alentejo.
Above the city there is a small but important castle, which dominates a group of white houses and a church that in former times was a mosque.

This isolated population has gone through a long period of economic stagnation, which has favored the preservation of many vestiges of the Islamic occupation, to the point that Mértola is considered a
Vila Museu
(museum village) and one of the Portuguese towns that they better preserve their
Arabic essence.
Grândola
In Grândola you can find a green sea and one of the great
cork oak sanctuaries of
the Alentejo.
It is a natural area of great
ecological value
in which excellent biodiversity prevails, and in which the extraction of cork constitutes one of the great riches of the forest.

beach Melides
is a long sandy cove that separates the sea from the lagoon Melides.
Between these two stretches of water, the

Golegã
Its relationship with agricultural activity led to the holding of fairs and markets, where farmers and livestock breeders came to exhibit their products and animals.
During the 18th century, the festivities in honor of San Martín (November 11) were preferred by
horse breeders
to show off the breed animals with all their pride.
At that time horse shows and competitions were held.
This event, which was gradually gaining importance, is the precedent of the current National Horse Fair, of great national relevance in the equestrian specialty.

romantic garden
that surrounds the old studio of Carlos Relvas, a well-known 19th century photographer, or the
Martins Correia Museum of Painting and Sculpture
, a contemporary artist.
Odemira
We ended up in a true haven of peace.
The key points of the Odemira area are within half an hour by car:
Vila Nova de Milfontes
(a very lively town perfect to settle, with its castle and its beaches without waves, where the Mira river dies),
Zambujeira do Mar,
Porto Covo and the town of Odemira itself, a beautiful place with a historic center that is a must-see.
