Guest of Europe 1 Sunday February 21, the president of the National League against cancer, Professor Axel Kahn, suggested the idea of setting up a confinement "of one month to six weeks" in order to fight effectively against the Covid-19.

For him, however, the solution to self-containment is not the right one.

ANALYSIS

What strategy should France adopt to fight effectively against the coronavirus?

After a year of health crisis, which began with confinement, then relaxation, then new confinement, and finally a general curfew, the Covid-19 is still there.

More than 22,000 new contaminations were recorded by Public Health France on Saturday, and we still do not know when the curfew will end, decreed in the territory since the beginning of January.

According to him, there is no doubt: "For a month or six weeks, it takes a very important effort, like confinement."

Vaccinate and confine

To have an effective "zero Covid" strategy, the president of the National Cancer League explains that it is necessary to play on two parameters.

First, "it is necessary to reduce the viral circulation, to reduce the emergence of variants, in particular those resistant to vaccines", indicates the doctor.

At the same time, "we must vaccinate all the time," he explains, arguing that the countries which have vaccinated the best are also those which have set up containment.

"Therefore," Alex Khan proposes to put in place a "containment-type" effort, over a period of no more than six weeks, "no more."

After this period, with a massive campaign of tests, an effective vaccine strategy, and respect for barrier gestures, "we would arrive at the beginning of September at a level of very low viral circulation," suggests Alex Khan.

"The situation would be manageable, (…) we would arrive at a sufficient level of protection and collective immunity."

CORONAVIRUS ESSENTIALS

> Are private parties really prohibited with the curfew?

> Coronavirus: a universal vaccine available "towards the end of the year"

> The English variant would cause slightly different symptoms

> Audio, webcams ... When technology adapts to teleworking

> Containment is good for the planet

"What despairs people the most?"

"Nothing is opposed to this strategy", continues the doctor on Europe 1. Indeed, it would be possible to decree a new confinement.

But in recent weeks, the executive has changed its mind on the subject, Emmanuel Macron wanting to avoid everything.

Also, several strong arguments go against the idea of a third confinement, whether on the economic impact that such a decision would generate, or on the mental health of the French.

"It's fair," replies Alex Khan, who asks: "What despairs people the most? It is the fact of continuing to live on as we live today without being precise. from the release date to the shutdown date, or a strategy that involves effort, but has a clear outcome? "

"Me, I say that we concentrate the effort and then we relax much more!"

"Today, what do we say? We say that 'it's not that bad'. We say that 'of course, there are 500 deaths a day, but hey, it's like that '(…) and that' if there is no epidemic peak, we continue like this. '

But for how long? ", Continues the president of the National League against cancer.

"Are we going to continue to survive like that? Me, I say that we concentrate the effort and afterwards, we release much more. While continuing to fight obviously against the virus", summarizes Alex Khan, who estimates that opinion would be very favorable to this option.
