The advances in our western culture have brought us a lot, but also two major problems: On average, we don't exercise enough and we eat too unhealthily.

And of course there are a lot of strategies, diets and training methods to get a better grip on that.

Just which of them is really useful?

And what does the nutrition expert say?

So that you don't have to test everything through, WELT reporter Britta Sieling does it for you in the video series “Britta tries it”.

Every two weeks you will find their new test results here.

The current episode is about self-sufficient nutrition - eating like grandmothers.

An excerpt from the transcript

Day 3

Britta:

I just drove into the forest looking for nettle seeds.

These are the little globules that you always see on the nettle plants.

And I had read that you can collect them, dry them and process them into a powder that is full of minerals.

However, I somehow can't find any nettles here and I'm just wondering why that is.

Britta:

I think I'll give it up for today.

It doesn't make any sense anymore.

Well, I haven't found anything, haven't found any nettles and it's slowly getting dark and I'm super cold.

So I think I'll stop the action now.

Day 4

Britta:

This is what my attempt to bake bread looks like now.

The dough is now ready, I'll put it in the mold right away.

And then I put the whole thing in the oven without preheating.
