The Cité scolaire internationale project in Marseille -

BOUYGUES BÂTIMENT SUD-EST

  • Launched in 2015, the international school city project in Marseille will see the light of day in 2024 in the Euroméditerranée district.

  • Rudy Ricciotti signs there, with Richard Carta, his second achievement in Marseille after the Mucem.

  • This school, where courses will be given in five languages in addition to French, will be free and "open to any Marseille student who will have the level to enter", promised the rector.

  • The aim is to attract the installation of businesses and new families.

The first school year is scheduled for 2024. It will then be 420 schoolchildren, 720 middle school students and 1,050 high school students who will cross for the very first time the doors of the international school city of Marseille, whose architecture was unveiled on Wednesday.

It is signed by the architects Richard Carta and Rudy Ricciotti who, with the construction group Bouygues, unanimously won this public contract of 100 million euros.

The first of its kind in Marseille, this international school city will teach in five languages (English, Spanish, German, Mandarin and Arabic) in addition to French, from CP to 12th grade.

"There is no other model of this type that brings together from primary to university entrance, it's unique", rejoices Bernard Beignier, rector of the Aix-Marseille academy.

And as the law for a school of trust now allows, it will also be the first to be headed by one person for all levels.

The classrooms will be equipped with a videoconferencing system.

A partnership with the makers of the territory is also in the plan to develop a digital fablab, the use of which will be reserved for the students of the city.

"A message of attractiveness"

"This school is a message of attractiveness and competitiveness that we send to economic players," says Renaud Muselier, president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, who provided the ground for this project launched in 2015, under the aegis of Jean-Claude Gaudin.

The region puts 49% of the budget on the table, the department 37% and the city of Marseille 14%.

The competing group Eiffage, however, lodged a summary appeal before the administrative court of Marseille.

But Renaud Muselier wants to be optimistic: "It's a bad loser remedy, I have no worries," he assured in front of an audience of officials.

At the foot of the CGM tower, in the new districts of Euroméditerranée, we should thus find a little of the spirit of Mucem with the external mesh imagined by Rudy Ricciotti, which will be this time in flax fibers.

This is the second time he has built in Marseille.

And this school, as international as it is, he wanted it against the Anglo-Saxon model.

“It's a Latin school, with an enclosure and a garden inside, sheltered from the mistral and the solar castagne.

It will be a protected space, on the closed model of the Cistercian.

"

"It will take a real mix"

Faithful to his habit, the architect did not mince his words, pressing where it (can) hurt: "We are already seeing the success of the international school of Manosque, which mainly welcomes students of learned engineers from Iter, which also poses a problem for the rectorate.

The attractiveness is so strong that the parents of pupils of the territory fight there to have the children enrolled there.

I imagine that it will be the same in Marseille and that you will have a big job, Mr. Rector, to open it to all Marseillais.

"

"It will take a real mix, not just children of senior executives or CSP +++, we will have to sit around the table to find a modus operandi", engages Pierre-Marie Ganozzi, the assistant in charge of the school plan and school buildings in the city of Marseille, which also specifies that "the city of Marseille is very happy with this project".

"Any Marseille student who will have the level to enter this school will enter it, there will be bridges otherwise it would be counterproductive for everyone," said Rector Bernard Beignier.

"We will ensure it", he adds, specifying that "there will be no additional rights".

In other words, the international school city will be free.

“The purpose is to make sure that young families want to come to Marseille, adds the representative of the State.

The Marseillais must also want to stay in Marseille.

This city was designed for all the pupils of the territory.

He is already thinking of adding new languages, such as Portuguese.
