A highly pathogenic avian influenza virus was detected in water collected at Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture.


This is the first time that avian influenza virus has been confirmed in Nagano Prefecture, and the Ministry of the Environment has designated the area within 10 km around the point where water was collected as a "wild bird surveillance priority area" and is strengthening surveillance of wild birds.

According to Nagano Prefecture, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus of "H5N8 type" was detected on the 19th as a result of inspecting the water collected on the Okaya city side of Lake Suwa on the 14th of this month.



This is the first time that avian influenza virus has been detected in the prefecture.



For this reason, the Ministry of the Environment has designated the area within 10 km around the point where the water was collected as a "wild bird monitoring priority area" and is strengthening the monitoring of wild birds by patrol the area.



The prefecture also calls on poultry farmers in the prefecture to call attention and thoroughly disinfect.



According to the prefecture, no dead birds have been found in the surrounding area so far, and no abnormalities have been reported in interviews with 96 large poultry farmers in the prefecture.
