  • On January 27, 2021, the government adopted a decree specifying which masks are considered truly protective against Covid-19, and in particular its variants.

  • Since that date, some fabric masks no longer fall within the recommended types of protection.

And some supermarket chains have refused access to customers not equipped, according to them, with appropriate masks.

, the Carrefour and E. Leclerc groups specify the protocol in force in their brands.

Should we now be particularly vigilant when choosing the mask with which we will do our shopping?

This is what an alarming message relayed on Facebook suggests: "Wearing an artisanal fabric mask is now prohibited in certain supermarkets"

As an example, this text relays two different testimonies.

“Yesterday, a person was prohibited from entering a store in Laon (02), because this mask is no longer accepted.

Tolerant, the manager of the store let him in because the circular dated from this day ”, maintains the first, associated with a store E. Leclerc.

It refers to the decree adopted on January 27, 2021 by the government to specify which masks are considered sufficiently protective against the variants of Covid-19.

The second testimony, he said: “[The] Carrefour Market in Ballancourt (91) informed me that fabric masks were prohibited in the store.

But my mask is in category 1 fabric as I told them, normally authorized, am I wrong ???

They maintained that only surgical masks were allowed ”

FAKE OFF

As the government specified when adopting its decree at the end of January, only three types of sufficiently filtering masks must be worn to protect against the epidemic: surgical masks, FFP2 and certain fabric masks.

Among the latter, only those filtering particles at 90% (against 70% until now) meet health requirements.

Consequently, industrial fabric masks remain recommended provided they are category 1, unlike category 2 - this specificity being indicated on their packaging by the words "UNS1" or "UNS2".

As for the artisanal handmade mask, it “does not offer all the necessary guarantees” according to the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, who therefore advises against their use.

Difficult, in practice, to justify the standard of its fabric mask when shopping, while a surgical mask, easily identifiable, avoids any doubt.

Shortly after the adoption of the decree, the Carrefour of the Westfield-Euralille shopping center had refused certain customers on the grounds that they were wearing a fabric mask, yet adapted to the standards in force.

The group had pleaded on Twitter a "misunderstanding" and an "isolated error" to this store, as reported by our colleagues from

, the Carrefour group indicates, without returning to the question of a similar refusal within a store in Ballancourt (Essonne): “Following the new health recommendations announced by the government, Carrefour invites all its customers to wear surgical masks, FFP2, or UNS1 reusable fabric masks, ie all masks that allow 90% filtration of particles ”.

For its part, the E. Leclerc group explains to us that its “stores comply with regulations and ask their customers to ensure compliance with the standards in force concerning masks.
