The symptoms of gastroenteritis and food poisoning - vomiting, diarrhea, nausea - are quite similar.

Doctor Jimmy Mohamed explains how to differentiate them Thursday in "No Appointment" on Europe 1. Depending on the intensity of the symptoms, it is sometimes necessary to consult a doctor.

Vomiting, diarrhea, nausea.

Although they have very different causes, gastroenteritis and food poisoning often have similar symptoms.

How in this case distinguish them from one another?

How to make the difference ?

Food poisoning is due to the ingestion of a product that is not fresh, expired or turned for example.

In this case, we feel bad in the hours following the meal.

We vomit quickly and diarrhea often follows.

Intoxication should not be confused with indigestion which is due to a meal that is too sweet, too fatty or too rich, in short, difficult to digest.

For gastroenteritis, there is often a background of an epidemic.

However, it is possible not to find any "culprit" in his entourage since some gastroenteritis viruses, such as norovirus, can survive two to three weeks on inert surfaces, a doorknob for example.

In which cases should you consult a doctor?

If the symptoms do not worsen, it is not always necessary to see a doctor.

But it should be called without delay in a few specific cases.

First, if there is blood in the stool, since this may be a sign of a bacterial infection, called dysenteric syndrome.

Then, if one suffers from water-borne diarrhea, occurring more than 10 times a day.

Third warning sign: continuous vomiting, which prevents you from hydrating.

Same thing for the temperature, which is not a symptom of gastroenteric.

In the event of a plateau at 39 or 40 degrees, it is therefore better to consult.

Only one drug is useful to reduce (a little) the flow of stools.

This is Tiorfan, which can only be bought on medical prescription.

To heal as quickly as possible, the most important thing is to stay hydrated and adopt a diet based on rice, bananas and carrots.
