The cold snap and exceptional snowfall currently hitting Greece killed two on Tuesday and significantly disrupted transport in Athens as well as sea and air links. 

The Parthenon, the famous 5th century BCE site, clinging to the Holy Rock in the historic center of Athens, was barely noticeable on Tuesday in heavy snow showers.

Even though it had snowed on the Acropolis in 2019, most experts consider that this depression called "Medea", named after a character in Greek mythology, brought "a record" of snowfall for Athens since. at least ten years.

As the sun was shining Wednesday morning and the snow melted after reaching some 30 cm in thickness in the suburbs of the capital, some 250,000 homes in the Athens region were still without power on Wednesday, according to Yorgos Patoulis, prefect of Attica.
