• Investigation: CSIC researchers work on a spray to 'fool' the Covid-19 virus and stop the infection

  • Live: last minute of the coronavirus

It is not surprising that Brazilian President

Jair Bolsonaro has announced his intention to request authorization for the emergency use of an anticovid spray

that is still under investigation.

Previously he opted for drugs whose effectiveness had not been scientifically proven.

It happened with chloroquine.

As expressed in his twitter account, it is "a nasal spray developed by the Ichilov Medical Center in Israel, with an efficacy of almost 100% against Covid-19, in serious cases" and "will be sent shortly to ANVISA (the Brazilian health regulator) a request to analyze this drug for emergency use. "

The uproar that his statements have caused now requires some clarification.

To begin with, this almost 100% refers to the preliminary research being carried out by hospitals in Tel Aviv.

So far,

it has only been experimented with 30 patients

, of which 29 had positive results.

I mean, there is nothing conclusive.

Israeli doctors say that the EXO-CD24 (as it calls the spray in the medical and scientific context) is a device based on CD24 proteins that act as a protective signal sent to the immune system to protect itself from infection.

Patients who have been tested inhaled it for a few minutes each day and in less than a week, recovery began to occur.

However, the group of 30 people is very small and the research is still very preliminary, so it is

very risky to ask for its authorization without having scientific verification

of its true effectiveness.

For this, mass trials are essential.

At his insistence, Bolsonario has spoken with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to participate in clinical trials.

It should be remembered that there are three phases that you must overcome and, for now, you are in the first.

Two weeks ago, the Ichilov Medical Center warned of the experimentation that was being done with moderate to severe admitted patients.

However, apart from working with a small group of patients and being in the first phase of clinical trials,

the results have also not been published in any peer-reviewed journal

(evaluation of work carried out by one or more people with similar competences) and it is unknown whether it was administered for placebo to a control group.

Despite this, a few days ago Netanyahu described EXO-CD24 as a "miracle" treatment.

A statement, for the moment, very daring, in view of the data available today.
