The figure of reggae in France and performer of "To Each His Way" Tonton David died at the age of 53.

The causes of death are not known.

David Grammont of his real name was also made known for "Peoples of the world" with a clip directed by Mathieu Kassovitz.

Tonton David, a reggae figure in France, famous for his hit "To Each His Way" in the 1990s, died at the age of 53, one of his children and his former manager told AFP.

The singer, whose origin of death has not been specified, was also known for "Peoples of the world" (and his famous intro "From a people who suffered a lot / We are from a people who no longer want to suffer ") with a clip directed by Mathieu Kassovitz.

But the hit of David Grammont, born in Paris and raised in Champigny-sur-Marne, in the Val-de-Marne, will remain "Each his way", title which had risen to the third place of best sales in France.

The track was also chosen for the soundtrack of the film "An Indian in the City", a film with eight million spectators.

Tributes have flourished on social networks.
