Freezing winter weather with blue skies and lots of sunshine lured many Berliners to their front door at the weekend.

Even on Sunday the temperatures stayed below freezing, but the snow glistened invitingly in the sun in numerous places.

Many took the opportunity for walks, tobogganing, ice skating or to feel their way on the ice, for example in southwest Berlin on the Krummen Lanke and on the Schlachtensee (Steglitz-Zehlendorf).

The police and fire brigade in Berlin expressly warned against stepping on ice surfaces in the capital.

Sun rays and water currents could also make supposedly solid ice brittle and unstable.

That such warnings are not out of thin air became apparent on Saturday when several people broke into the ice on the Schlachtensee.

According to a fire department spokesman, they were able to free themselves.

The police were often on the weekend with a helicopter in action, such as on Sunday afternoon over the Müggelsee, where, according to the police, several hundred people were again on the ice and had not responded to being spoken to from the shore.

The helicopter had already flown over the Müggelsee on Saturday for the same reason.

He later also circled over the Rummelsburger Bucht in Friedrichshain and over the Weißensee in the district of Weißensee (Pankow) and warned numerous people, some of whom were out on the ice with bicycles and sleds.

A video of the operation in Pankow caused criticism of the police on social media.

According to a police spokesman on Sunday, the helicopter takes off when there are indications of violations or emergencies.

At one point on the Schlachtensee in the Nikolassee district, the ice broke on Saturday, according to the police, when a father and his one-year-old child moved on it.

They came to a hospital by ambulance for control, but they are fine.

The ice not far from Fischerhüttenstrasse did not last for two men either.

"You were knee-deep in the water," said a fire department spokesman.

The men did not suffer any injuries.

Some even used bikes on the ice

The police were reported on Sunday that four people broke into the ice at the Müggelsee outdoor pool.

When the police arrived there, however, nobody was around.

The police and fire brigade did not receive any further reports on careless Berliners who did not hold the ice on Sunday afternoon.

The ice surface of the small lake at Lauenburger Platz in Steglitz turned into an ice hockey field at the weekend.

In Schöneberg an der Sternwarte many tobogganists were out and about to try out how well they could take the slopes there.

There was also a lot of activity on the snow-covered Tempelhofer Feld, and even cross-country skiers could be seen there.

And on the frozen pond in the Dreipfuhlpark in Zehlendorf in the southwest of Berlin, a number of ice skaters turned their circles on Sunday.

A number of skaters also dared to go on the ice on the small lake in the Schöneberg city park.

The German Weather Service (DWD) had predicted permafrost for the weekend in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Low temperatures between minus 8 and minus 13 degrees were expected for Monday night, and even down to minus 18 degrees south of Berlin.
