In this edition of the “Media Week” we are talking about the well-known major Hamburg publisher Gruner + Jahr.

Renowned magazines such as “Stern”, “Geo”, “Capital” and “Brigitte” appear at G + J.

But ten years ago G + J was a publishing house of international importance. Today the media company has almost completely shrunk to a purely national magazine company.

Almost all international holdings were sold.

Now it is likely that G + J will go under the umbrella of RTL in the medium term.

Both companies belong to the Bertelsmann media group.

Its CEO Thomas Rabe has announced an "open-ended" review of the option - but the matter is probably not as open-ended as the group headquarters in Gütersloh do.

Rabe wants to create a more efficient group - and many different subsidiaries lead to friction losses.

In addition, there is the already declining performance of classic media companies.

We also discuss a case with the New York Times in this issue of the media podcast.

A medical editor who worked for the paper for 45 years, Donald McNeil, has left.

On a study trip with young people to Peru, which took place in 2019, McNeil had used a racist word.

But McNeil had apparently only used the word because a participant had asked him about it beforehand.

Dean Baquet, the editor-in-chief of the "Times", initially showed indulgence because it was not McNeil's intention to use the word.

After 150 employees of the newspaper protested, McNeil decided (on his own initiative?) To leave the "New York Times".

In the meantime, Baquet had said that the use of racist words was not permitted regardless of the intention - and thus sparked a debate about journalistic standards and guidelines.
