A total of 1,599 classes and 103 schools are currently closed due to cases of Covid-19, the Ministry of National Education said on Friday, figures up sharply compared to last week.

Last week, official figures reported 934 classes - out of a total of 528,400 - and 105 schools closed.

The academies of Versailles and Créteil are particularly concerned by these class closures.

However, these figures do not take into account establishments in zone A, on vacation for a week.

The growing concern around the variants of the coronavirus led Monday to a further tightening of health rules at school, which is reflected in an acceleration of closures.

To curb them, a new measure is therefore introduced from kindergarten to high school: an entire class can now be closed if a child, or a member of his family, is contaminated by one of the two variants.

In detail, 69 schools (out of 38,024) are currently closed, as well as 26 colleges (out of 5,513), and 8 high schools (out of 2,990).

Regarding contamination, they are decreasing among students, with 10,390 young people in school identified positive for Covid-19, against 12,520 last week (out of 12.4 million in France), knowing that zone A is not taken into account.

On the staff side, official figures also show a decrease, with 1,308 cases against 1,808 last Friday (out of a total of 1.16 million).
