Chick Corea is dead. The legendary jazz pianist died of a rare cancer, as announced on Thursday on his Facebook page.

The disease was therefore only diagnosed very recently.

Corea died on Tuesday.

The American was 79 years old.

Born in 1941 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Corea was one of the most important representatives of jazz rock.

In the early 1960s he established himself as a pianist, working with Stan Getz, Herbie Mann and others.

Later in the decade he joined Miles Davis' band and played a key role in enabling the trumpeter to transition to a more contemporary sound.

After working with Davis, he founded his own electric band Return to Forever in 1971, which shaped the so-called fusion era.

In the following decades Corea worked on countless projects and thus showed his range.

As a composer, Corea wrote the Latin jazz classic "Spain", probably his most famous hit.
