  • Since the spring, Germany has gradually stepped up its health measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Schools and most businesses are closed, but not all exits are prohibited.

  • Invited Monday on BFMTV and RMC, Professor Fontanet spoke of "strict confinement" in Germany, a term disputed by several Internet users.

  • The health strategy actually varies on one side of the Rhine and the other.

Should France consider a new confinement on the model of Germany?

Invited Monday on BFMTV and RMC, Professor Arnaud Fontanet recalled the danger of the so-called "English" variant of the coronavirus: "50% more transmissible than the 2020 virus", it could be "in the majority at the beginning of March" among the positive cases.

According to the epidemiologist, "the Germans are the only [in Europe] who currently have control" of the epidemic, because "they have been in strict confinement since January 5".

The member of the scientific council added that in Germany, "you cannot go more than 15 km from your home", contrary to the rules of other European countries.

"We can leave our home"

Several internet users have criticized these claims.

"I live in Germany, we are not in strict confinement, testifies Nilcram in comment of the interview on YouTube.

We can leave our house at the time we want, during the time we want!

Right, the shops are closed!

Yannick, who "lives in Munich" is indignant: "We are not confined and we never have been."

What is it really ?

FAKE OFF

On Wednesday, Germany announced that it was considering extending the restrictive measures in force in the country to fight against the coronavirus.

Rules that have been tightened several times since the spring.

On December 16, schools and non-essential businesses were closed, joining bars, restaurants and cultural venues, which had lowered the curtain since November.

Since the beginning of January, private gatherings have been limited to members of the same household plus one person, against five previously.

Finally, a restriction on movement within a radius of 15 km from home has indeed been implemented, but it specifically targets districts where the viral incidence exceeds 200 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

No certificate to complete in these areas, you must be able to justify a professional or medical reason.

Other measures have been taken at regional level, such as a 9 p.m. curfew in Bavaria, for example.

Baden-Württemberg is also considering localized curfews after the cancellation on Monday of this Land-wide measure by the administrative justice.

Schools and businesses closed

With the exception of these local restrictions, a person therefore retains the right to leave their home in Germany.

On the other hand, schools and most businesses remain closed, which makes the German system more restrictive, in certain aspects, than the current French rules.

"Schools and shops, this is where it will play out", rightly underlined Professor Arnaud Fontanet, for whom "there is room for maneuver between strict confinement and what we are experiencing today".

According to him, France could therefore toughen measures in the event of a worsening of the epidemic and move closer to Germany's position.

This would not necessarily lead to "strict confinement", as it is understood, in France, since the experiences of spring and autumn.
