Among the prisoners of the concentration camp, Ilse Koch was quickly nicknamed "Kommandeuse" or "Beast of Buchenwald".
She behaved as the landlady of the Ettersberg outside the actual prisoner area, for example inciting SS men to punish prisoners who had allegedly viewed them as "lewd".
Ilse Koch and her husband Karl Otto Koch enriched themselves to a degree that was too much even for the SS.
