The mayor of the South Korean capital, Seoul, has announced that starting this Monday it will test for the coronavirus and domestic cats and dogs in case they show symptoms,

weeks after the authorities confirmed a first case in a cat

in Jinju city.

That case was confirmed two weeks ago in an animal that lived in a religious compound where an outbreak was detected with 29 affected, including the owners of three cats.

The authorities suspect that it was they, who had tested positive, who infected the pet.

The experts recalled then that

reverse spread, from cats to people, is considered very rare

.

Park Yoo Mi, a worker from the City Hall's disease control department, has stated that the tests will be carried out only on animals that have shown fever, cough, respiratory problems and discharge from the eyes or nose.

Likewise, he has detailed that the tests will be carried out in the home where the animal is located and has added that they will be carried out by a team in which there will be a veterinarian, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

On the other hand, Park has stressed that,

if the animal tests positive, it will have to be confined for fourteen days

at home and has added that if the owners cannot take care of the animal because they are hospitalized with Covid-19 or are of advanced age, the animals will be transferred to a facility in the capital for isolation.

"Please keep your dogs two meters away from people and other dogs when you go out for a walk and strictly respect the measures against the coronavirus, including the use of a mask and hand washing," he added.

The South Korean authorities have confirmed this Monday less than 300 daily cases for the first time since November, when the third wave of the pandemic began in the country.

Thus, 289 cases and three deaths have been confirmed, bringing the total to 81,185 and 1,474, respectively.
