The death of a deputy in the Lebanese parliament, Jean Obeid, with the "Corona" virus

Deputy in the Lebanese Parliament Jean Obeid died at the age of 82, after complications from his infection with Corona.

In a summary of his life, he worked during the period between 1959 and 1960 in the magazines of Magazine and the Arab Week, and in 1960 he studied law at Saint Joseph University.

He also worked from 1960 to 1963 in Lisan El Hal magazine, and between 1966 to 1972 for Al Sayyad magazine, Al Ahrar newspaper and Al Anwar newspaper.

In 1978, he was appointed advisor to the President of the Republic, Elias Sarkis, and he continued this work until the end of his term in 1982.

In 1983, he appointed an advisor to the President of the Republic, Amin Gemayel, until 1987, and during this period he participated in the negotiations to cancel the May 17 treaty with Israel and in drafting the annulment statement.

During the period of the Lebanese Civil War, he participated in the Geneva conference to resolve the internal conflict and end the civil war.

Obeid was appointed in 1991 as a deputy for the Maronite seat in the Chouf.

He was elected in 1992 as a representative for Tripoli in the North Governorate, and re-elected in the 1996 and 2000 rounds for the same seat.

While he did not run for the 2005 elections due to the circumstances that accompanied it after the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the difference of political forces in Tripoli, and not including any of the lists that were formed from the two parties, he did not like to participate as an independent or to be his own list.

He participated in the 2009 elections as an independent candidate, but he did not achieve success.

He fought the parliamentary battle again and ran for the Maronite seat in Tripoli for the list of determination headed by former Prime Minister Najib Mikati in the parliamentary elections that took place on May 6, 2018, which won four seats for Tripoli and Jean Obeid won the Maronite seat to enter the parliamentary seminar again.

He participated in the government twice as minister:

- From November 7, 1996 to December 4, 1998, Prime Minister Rafic Hariri's government under President Elias Hrawi was Minister of National Education and Minister of Youth and Sports.


From April 17, 2003 to October 26, 2004 in Prime Minister Rafic Hariri's government under President Emile Lahoud as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
