The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, showed his position against the prohibition of wolf hunting throughout Spain that has been decided by the Department of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.

"As minister of cattle ranchers, I am by his side and share his concern," said the minister in statements collected by Servimedia, when asked about the decision of the State Commission for Natural Heritage and Biodiversity to tighten the restriction on wolf hunting , as this animal is included in the List of Wild Species in the Special Protection Regime (Lespre).

This decision, taken by vote last week, means the prohibition of hunting the animal north of the Duero, where it was allowed.

Until then, the Iberian wolf populations were already protected south of that river and from the change the wolf became protected throughout Spain and its sport hunting will be prohibited, as is already the case in France and Portugal.

In the Minister's opinion, the current regulation is "sufficient", which lists the wolf only as a "protected species", and he recalled that this has been the position of his ministry "up to two occasions" in the preparation of the strategic plan for wolf management .

"This is a very controversial and old issue in history, with many points of view, all legitimate. Now it is a question of going from a protected species regime to a special protection regime, and I, as a minister, do not agree "Planas admitted.

"I respect that decision," he added, "but I share the concern of the ranchers and as their minister, I am by their side. We must find a fair balance where we achieve what we all want: to maintain our biodiversity and at the same time the interests and the concerns of the livestock sector and in particular of extensive livestock ".

The proposal required a double vote because the first was tied.

Cantabria, Asturias, Castilla y León and Galicia, where more than 90% of the wolf populations live, had already shown their dissatisfaction with the total protection.

The head of Agriculture explained that the agricultural insurance system managed by Agroseguro has recorded 592 incidents related to the wolf in the last year in Spain, for which compensation amounting to 252,000 euros has been paid.
