The occurrence of the coronavirus variant B.1.1.7 in home residents who have already been vaccinated twice in the Osnabrück district will also concern the Robert Koch Institute and the Paul Ehrlich Institute.

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) said in Berlin that he had asked both institutes for an examination.

The authorities were very concerned about the infections after the vaccinations.

Spahn emphasized that there could be several explanations.

Among other things, it could be that the patients were infected with the coronavirus many weeks ago, but the infections remained undetected.

Based on the case, it cannot be ruled out that the vaccinations did not prevent the infections, but only alleviated the course of the disease.

Or it has to do with the fact that it takes a while after the vaccination to achieve full vaccination protection.

The British virus variant was detected in 14 seniors at the facility.

All residents received the second vaccination on January 25th.

According to the management of the home, only asymptomatic or mild courses of the disease have been found so far.

For the General Secretary of the German Society for Immunology, Carsten Watzl, the case is not worrying.

Since there have been no severe courses in the home so far, one can assume that the vaccinated residents were not completely defenseless against the virus.
