BEKASI, INDONESIA

A village invaded by waves of blood red color.

The surreal scene takes place in Indonesia, after the flooding of a dyeing factory in the center of the island of Java.

Residents of Jenggot, near the town of Pekalongan, found themselves wading through the reddish water on Saturday.

They immediately shared photos of this exceptional phenomenon on social networks.

Authorities later confirmed that this color came from a factory that dyed fabric used by several workshops in the region that made Javanese batiks.

Pékalongan is renowned for its large number of textile factories specializing in batik, a piece of fabric decorated, often with geometric patterns, using protective wax and dyes.

Packets of dye "carried away by the waves"

"They did not throw out the dye on purpose, but several factories were flooded and packages of dye were washed away," an official from the local disaster relief agency told AFP on Sunday. Dimas Arga Yudha.

He made it clear that this dye is neither toxic nor dangerous.

Authorities deployed water pumps and the flooded area was cleared within an hour.

Floods are very frequent in the Indonesian archipelago, especially during the rainy season.

In January, at least 21 people died and more than 60,000 were evacuated after severe flooding in South Kalimantan.
