"Straw straw ban" must be replaced with high quality

  Bumper harvest

It has been one month since the "straw straw ban" was officially implemented.

In response to the national call, the catering industry has stopped using non-degradable plastic straws and replaced them with paper straws and PLA polylactic acid biodegradable straws.

According to a CCTV report, due to cost considerations, many milk tea brands start using paper straws, which makes many consumers feel inconvenient. Some consumers describe "using a paper straw to drink milk tea like a toilet paper core" and "drinking paper The straw suddenly fell apart."

On the first day of 2021, the catering industry across the country banned the use of non-degradable disposable plastic straws.

From the perspective of implementation, catering companies are more conscious of replacing non-degradable plastic straws with environmentally friendly alternatives.

This move obviously helps implement the "plastic ban" and curb "white pollution."

However, consumers' experience of using environmentally-friendly alternative straws is not good. Previously, some consumers reported that using paper straws had a pulpy or gluey taste, which destroyed the taste of the drink itself.

The reporter test also found that the paper straw will become soft and out of shape after being put into the drink; although the PLA polylactic acid degradable straw has little effect on the taste, it will gradually become soft during use.

It can be seen that these two alternatives bring a bad experience to consumers. If this experience cannot be improved, it is not ruled out that some consumers abandon beverage consumption, and businesses may secretly resume using non-degradable plastic straws for profit.

In order for consumers to be satisfied with the environmentally friendly alternative straws, the product quality must be improved so that it will neither deform nor affect the taste when used.

Judging from the popular Korean paper straws, paper straws use a lot of natural pulp to increase the thickness of the base paper. A paper straw can be soaked in hot water for two days, or even in ice water for up to 5 days.

Obviously, such a paper straw will not deform and affect the taste during use.

The quality of our paper straws should be on par with Korean products.

The problem is that cost affects the choice of Chinese merchants and product quality.

It is reported that the cost of paper straws in my country is about 3 cents per straw, and the cost of PLA degradable polylactic acid straws is the highest, about 5 cents per straw.

The paper straws in South Korea are about RMB 1 cent and 2 cents.

If the price of the drink does not increase and the quality does not decrease, it means that the cost will be borne by the merchant when choosing a good-quality paper straw.

Therefore, businesses will choose low-cost paper straws driven by their interests.

How to improve the quality of paper straws?

The author believes that higher standards of paper straws should be implemented in accordance with the mandatory national standards. Once merchants generally use such straws, increased demand will reduce production costs, which in turn will encourage merchants to choose.

Regrettably, after the "Straw Straw Banning Order" was formally implemented, there seems to be only the "Made in Zhejiang" standard for Disposable Paper Drinking Straws, but there is no national mandatory standard.

Not only the paper straws lack mandatory national standards, but the entire "degradable plastic products" lack uniform regulations and standards.

This may affect the effect of the "plastic ban".

Therefore, whether it is a "plastic ban order" or a "straw plastic ban order", it cannot become a "polished rod ban". It must have a complete set of standards and systems to regulate production, sales, and use links, as well as provide supervision and law enforcement and public opinion supervision. Guideline.

If you want to replace the excellent quality, you must have excellent standards.

It should be emphasized that businesses cannot blindly pursue profits, but should assume social responsibilities.

Taking the reduction of straw pollution as an example, businesses should not only use higher-quality paper straws and PLA degradable straws, but also have other innovative methods to reduce plastic pollution.

For example, there is a drinking spout on the lid of a certain foreign fast food drink. Just open the small lid on it and you can drink it directly, replacing the use of plastic straws in the past.

This kind of innovation is worth learning and encouraging.

Eventually implemented on the consumer side, consumers should also gradually become accustomed to the experience of environmentally-friendly alternatives to straws, and promote green supply by businesses with environmentally-friendly consumption.
