Mickaël Bosredon / 20 Minutes

  • Historic site of the Reggae Sun Ska festival, the domain of Nodris in the heart of the Médoc, is being completely rehabilitated.

  • It will always host cultural events, but also breeders and an organic market gardener, with the aim of developing subsistence farming in the department.

  • The production will partly supply the colleges of the Médoc, and will also be sold on site.

It is a magnificent site of 43 hectares, located in the heart of the Médoc, between ocean and vineyard, and that reggae fans know well since it hosts the Reggae Sun Ska festival.

Acquired by the Gironde departmental council in 2019, the Nodris estate in Vertheuil will gradually evolve, to become a hybrid site that will always host cultural events, but also organic farmers.

Several buildings will be rehabilitated to allow farmers to settle down - Mickaël Bosredon / 20 Minutes

It is this mix of activities that seduced Fanny Ledauphin, 28 years old.

This former school teacher decided to give up everything in 2019, to start training as a farm manager, specializing in goat farming and cheese processing, in Melle in Deux-Sèvres.

“The routine didn't suit me anymore,” she explains.

And we all ask ourselves a lot of questions about the environment, about our future.

Here, everything is done to preserve the environment, including a purification plant for the treatment of wastewater.

About fifty goats

His companion, a former cook, followed him in his approach and turned to market gardening.

“The Nodris project appeared to us while I was still in training, that's where we decided to apply.

The timing was perfect, she smiled.

What has us more in this project is that we can also bring our past skills to it, since there is also an educational and nutritional aspect.

Fanny Ledauphin will operate a goat farm on the Nodris estate, in Gironde - Mickaël Bosredon / 20 Minutes

Fanny Ledauphin will welcome at the start, in 2022, around thirty alpine goats, “which will be fed with the meadows of Nodris and with organic cereals produced in the surroundings.

"She will make cheese," lactic acid, tomme and fromage blanc.

"Ultimately, she hopes to grow to around fifty goats, which would represent around 30,000 liters of milk per year.

"I am already in contact with three Amap (association for the maintenance of local agriculture) to sell my products, and I would like to establish a partnership with communities, restaurants ..."

"We will play the card of solidarity between us"

His companion will be requested mainly by the colleges of the Médoc to provide them with vegetables.

“But there will also be a store on Nodris, where we can do direct sales.

And we would like to use the cannery that will be on site to process vegetables ”continues Fanny Ledauphin, who assures that she has“ many other projects in mind.

She hopes in particular to forge partnerships with the poultry farmer who will settle there.

“We will play the card of solidarity between us.

It's a bit of a laboratory here, because I think farmers want less and less to be alone in their corner, which is more when you start.

These values of sharing are increasingly sought after.

»An apiary will finally complete the agricultural part of the estate.

For this agricultural project, the departmental council launched a Call for expressions of interest, for which it received around forty applications.

“Providing a tool like this facilitates the emergence of projects, because we know that access to land is difficult,” explains Dominique Fedieu, departmental advisor

in charge of the Gironde Alimen'terre program.

"Supplying colleges to guarantee quality products"

The amount of investment for the project is 5.8 million euros from the department, the region providing 780,000 euros for the development of a large entertainment area, and the State 1.2 million in part of the recovery plan.

"The farmers will market their production as they wish, but the idea is still to supply the colleges to guarantee them quality products", insists the president of the department Jean-Luc Gleyze (PS).

“The food issue is becoming more and more prominent,” he continues.

The health crisis is leading us to turn more and more to short circuits.

And taste education for young people is essential.

It is therefore imperative to allow market gardeners, breeders and beekeepers to settle on land.

The Gironde is very forest and wine-growing, it needs to further develop the market gardening component in order to install subsistence farming.

"

"It will be a site open to everyone"

But Nodris is also a cultural project.

Reggae Sun Ska should always be welcomed there in the summer.

And one will also find there studios and rooms for the reception of artists in residence, places of exposure, or a space devoted to the project Demos (Device of musical education by the orchestra with social vocation), intended to introduce children to the world of classical music.

"It will be a site open to everyone," insists Jean-Luc Gleyze.

We thus show that it is possible to imagine hybrid third places, and in particular agricultural ones.

The idea is that it is inspiring and that it makes others want to start producing food, proximity and quality agriculture.
