After the total critical success of

Nomadland

, Chloe Zhao takes on a sacred monster of popular culture: Dracula.

The director has in fact signed with Universal to develop a remake of the horror classic.

And don't expect a copy of the 1930s movie starring Bela Lugosi as the vampire.

Chloe Zhao's Dracula will be… a futuristic western, according to

Variety

.

“I have always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other that they embody.

I'm very excited to be working with the team at Universal to reimagine such a beloved character, ”she told the post.

Universal relies heavily on Chloe Zhao

Since its creation in 1897 in the Bram Stoker novel, Dracula has never ceased to be reinterpreted and reinvented.

Become famous on the big screen with the film of Tod Browning in 1931, a few years after the

Nosferatu

of FW Murnau (inspired by the classic work but without the original title, for legal reasons), Count Dracula returns regularly to the cinema, first in the 1940s with John Carradine, then in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, as Christopher Lee.

In 1992, Gary Oldman played the character in Francis Ford Coppola's film.

Since then, all reboot attempts have turned out to be critical failures, and often commercial failures.

Hollywood's latest foray into Transylvania, with

Dracula Untold

in 2014, didn't generate any excitement around the character.

So much so that even with $ 217 million in box office receipts, and while lead actor Luke Evans had signed on for a series of films, no sequel was ultimately considered.

Universal therefore relies heavily on Chloe Zhao, who has established herself as one of the most requested directors of the moment after

Nomadland

, announced as a very serious candidate for the Oscars this year.

“Chloe's singular objective brings to light the stories of the forgotten and the misunderstood.

We're excited to be working with her as she reimagines one of the most iconic exterior characters ever, ”Peter Cramer, president of Universal Pictures, told Variety.
