The French electrician is embarking on a real innovation.

In a press release, EDF Renouvelables, a subsidiary of EDF, announced the launch of the construction of a floating photovoltaic plant on the water reservoir of the Lazer hydroelectric plant in the Hautes-Alpes.

This project, the first of this type for the electrician, "will cover an area of 24.5 hectares, covering approximately two-thirds of the surface of the water reservoir, for a production capacity of 20 MW" , details EDF Renouvelables.

It should be commissioned in spring 2022 and produce the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of 12,500 inhabitants, or the equivalent of what the hydroelectric plant is already producing.

A first for EDF but not a first in France

EDF notes that this project is part of both solar development objectives in France and its own “solar plan”.

EDF aims to become one of the leaders in the sector in France, with a 30% market share by 2035.

While this is a first for EDF in France, the plant will not be the first of this type in the country.

The floating solar power plant in Piolenc (Vaucluse), operated by the company Akuo Energy, had thus started producing in 2019. With a capacity of 17 MW, it is installed on the water of a former quarry.
