China News Service, Wuhan, February 2 (Gao Xiang) Medical staff from the Neurorehabilitation Department of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University used speech stimulation and music therapy to wake up a patient who had been in a severe coma for 39 days due to a cerebral infarction.

On the 2nd, the patient was able to carry out simple communication and physical activities with his family.

In December last year, 50-year-old Cen Yang (pseudonym) suddenly fell to the ground with slurred speech. An MRI of his brain suggested cerebral infarction.

Subsequently, his condition deteriorated further and he developed consciousness disturbance. The results of the re-examination indicated extensive cerebral infarction, increased cerebral edema, and cerebral herniation.

After undergoing the craniotomy, he has been in a persistent deep coma.

Taking into account Cen Yang’s past hypertension, diabetes and irregular medication control, excessive sputum, and risk of suffocation at any time, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University placed him in the highly dependent ward of the Neurorehabilitation Department. Professor Liao Weijing of the department led the team to reduce the underlying diseases of the patients. Symptomatic treatment of sugar, blood pressure, blood lipid, expectorant, anti-infection, etc., and comprehensive rehabilitation treatment to strengthen motor function.

Knowing that Cen Yang graduated from Tsinghua University, has a deep affection for his alma mater, and likes Faye Wong's music very much, Professor Liao Weijing's team developed a personalized language stimulation and music therapy.

Walking into the ward every day, Liao Weijing would greet Cen Yang loudly, detail the beautiful scenery of Tsinghua University's second gate, I-shaped hall, and lotus pond, and play Cenyang’s favorite song "Legend" by Faye Wong.

On January 10 this year, the nurse found that Cen Yang's eyes were moving.

During the physical examination, Cen Yang began to respond to the outside world with changes in his body position and painful stimulation.

When he heard the song, he slightly opened his eyes and his eyes were moist.

On January 20th, he fully recovered.

Liao Weijing introduced that the deep coma and the recovery of vegetative patients are inseparable from the joint efforts of medical staff and their families.

Mrs. Cen Yang stayed by his side from beginning to end. She often clasped his hand, constantly called his nickname, and talked about life, all of which played a very positive role.
