One of the most famous landmarks of Los Angeles, the "Hollywood" lettering in the mountains above the film metropolis, has temporarily become "Hollyboob".

Activists penetrated the steep terrain on Monday (local time) to the large lettering and used tarpaulins to convert the letter W into a B and the D into another B at the end, as photos show.

"Boob" is the English word for breast.

Six people were arrested, said police captain Steve Lurie on Twitter.

The group, five men and one woman, was quickly spotted by officers and then arrested, reported the Los Angeles Times.

According to the police, the group said they wanted to use the letter stunt to draw attention to the topic of breast cancer.

In the almost hundred-year history of the 15-meter-high and 140-meter-long lettering, the landmark has occasionally been used for play on words.

Pope John Paul II was greeted in 1987 with “Holywood” (Holy Forest).

Ten years earlier, advocates for a more generous marijuana law turned Hollywood into Hollyweed.

"Weed" means marijuana colloquially.

This happened again in 2017, alluding to the marijuana legalized in California.

"Hollywoodland" became "Hollywood"

The “Hollywoodland” logo was put up in 1923 by a real estate broker as a publicity stunt in the uninhabited hills at the time.

The construction was renovated in the late 1940s, during which time the last four letters were dismantled.
