  • Home visits to patients with Covid-19 have been carried out for a week in France.

  • Carried out by private nurses, they help patients to respect their isolation, especially within their home.

  • Demand is strong and professionals will now have to be convinced to accept this new act.

Isolation is the best solution to limit the spread.

This speech hammered by the health authorities since the start of the Covid-19 epidemic no longer seems to be debated.

However, this isolation phase remains a difficult ordeal for all those who have tested positive for the coronavirus.

For a week, the Health Insurance has set up a system of home visits for all those who wish.

Carried out by liberal nurses, these acts are not well known for the time being.

But seem very popular with patients.

"The visit must be made as soon as possible after the start of the isolation so that it is as effective as possible", explains Patrice Thoraval, nurse in the Côtes d'Armor and president of the Breton regional union.

By coming to the homes of the sick, he and his 5,700 colleagues working in the region provide advice to the sick and their families.

They can also conduct screenings within the home to ensure that only one person is affected.

“When you have to isolate yourself but live together in a small apartment, it's not always easy.

We explain what the right actions are to apply and we invite people to leave their homes as little as possible, ”explains the nurse.

These visits are also an opportunity to alert doctors when the state of health of patients is of concern.

"It's part of our missions"

In Brittany, one of the French regions least affected by Covid-19, around 500 new positive cases are recorded every day.

Since the implementation of this system a week ago, a little more than 400 people have benefited from these visits, or more than half of those who had accepted them.

Because if the demand is strong, it is subject to the acceptance of nurses.

Offered by Health Insurance during a “contact tracing” telephone exchange, these meetings are not compulsory for professionals.

The latter do not always have the desire or the time to honor them.

“For me, it was obvious.

It is part of our missions.

Everything we can do to limit the spread, we must do, "said Laurence Le Pallec, nurse in Pontivy, in Morbihan.

“I do them outside of my tours because I have to equip myself.

It takes a little while.

We discuss with patients, we reassure.

There is a lot of common sense ”.

Funded by Health Insurance, these acts are "rather well paid" believes the regional spokesperson for liberal nurses.

An argument that could push more professionals to accept them.

“For us, it is not normal that a patient who wants this visit cannot have it.

We hope to obtain a response rate of 100% quickly, ”explains Claudine Quéric, director of the Ille-et-Vilaine CPAM.

In addition to this visit, Covid-19 patients are systematically contacted by “contact tracing” teams seven days after their screening, to ensure that they can break their isolation.
